Robbie Williams & Joss Stone

Collaboration led to friendship and public support

She's the girl with the 'voice' and many Robbie Williams fans are grateful she used it recently to support Robbie Williams against Russell Brands swipes at him and his recent trip to rehab at the Brit Awards 2007. It may have lost her favour with UK tabloid columnists who seem hell bent on destroying Rob's career and character, and now her own but it hasn't done her any harm in the larger scale of things as she is now hugely popular in the states and her career and appeal is going from strength to strength.

The Times Online today published an article about Joss Stone and states....

"She has also, it must be said, lost the initial affection accorded to her by some pop columnists in those self-same red tops, and has become instead a whipping girl. To go within a matter of weeks from being the ingenue with the amazing voice to self-pitying fruitcake with a big attitude and allegedly fake accent takes some doing, but to her bewilderment Stone seems to have managed it. The backlash started at February's lacklustre Brits when she flew in to present the award for Best British Male Vocalist to James Morrison. MC Russell Brand made a running joke that night of Robbie Williams's newly announced entry into rehab and Stone, loyal to a man who has been a friend to her, spoke out in protest on taking the mike. This heinous sense-of-humour failure was only worsened, it was reported, by her doing so in an assumed American drawl. It may not have been her most polished public appearance, but it was at least well-meant. "Lots of people there that night knew Robbie and would boast in other circumstances of being his mate, yet not one of them stood up for him," she says. "Well, where I come from, if someone attacks your friends or your family you do something about it. So I said what I said and even if it wasn't very clever, at least it was sincere. And that it was Russell of all people only made it worse to me. He's been there himself and knows what it takes to admit you need help."
